AKM free music

What does AKM-free music mean?

AKM-free music means that neither the composition nor the lyrics of a piece of music are registered with the AKM, or that the author is not a member of the AKM. Here, the author takes care of the sub-licensing of his/her music himself/herself.

AKM free music

Depending on the type of exploitation (e.g. use as background music for an image film), a one-time license fee is charged and no further costs are incurred by collecting societies for the licensee (the customer).

On TerraSound.com all music tracks are not only GEMA-free (more info about the term Royalty free music on the home page), but also AKM-free and SUISA-free.

The great advantage of using AKM-free music is the payment of a one-time license for the corresponding type of exploitation. For example, for the use of AKM-free music from TerraSound.de in an image film, license 1 must be purchased once - then the film can be published on the Internet (YouTube and website) and also shown at trade fairs & events without incurring additional fees from collecting societies.

AKM - the Austrian Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers

AKM is the largest copyright society in Austria and virtually the Austrian equivalent of GEMA. AKM is organized as a cooperative and belongs to authors, composers and music publishers.

Just like the GEMA represents the AKM the rights of the composers and lyricists who wrote the songs. When music is played on the radio or at public events, for example, or made available on the Internet/mobile networks, the music authors are entitled to fair payment for this under copyright law.

The AKM collects these royalties in trust and passes them on to the composers, songwriters and publishers on a pro rata basis according to fixed accounting rules. The AKM itself is left with no profit - only the operating expenses incurred are deducted before distribution.

AKM now represents the copyrights of around 20,000 members (composers, lyricists, music publishers) in Austria.

What music is copyright free?

Music is copyright-free if it is not protected by copyright or if the author has released the music for free use. In general, there are two main categories of music that are considered copyright-free:

  • Public domain music: This is music whose copyright protection has expired or for which protection does not exist for other reasons. In many countries, copyright expires 70 years after the death of the author. After this period, the music may be considered to be in the public domain.
  • Music under Creative Commons licenses or other open licenses: Some creators make a conscious decision to release their music under a more flexible license than traditional copyright. Creative Commons licenses are an example of where there are different types of licenses that provide different terms of use. Some of these licenses allow free use, editing, and even commercial use of the music as long as the creator is properly credited.

Please keep in mind that copyright-free music is not necessarily free. Check the music's license terms and terms of use to make sure you're using the music according to the terms.
